LUCKNOW: BSP national president, Mayawati, extended her support to the women’s reservation bill on Tuesday, and expressed hope that the bill will be passed this time in the house after discussion.
She added that her party would have welcomed it even more if the women were given 50% reservation in the parliament and the state assemblies, instead of 33%, considering their population.
“The government must think about it.” Whatever reservation is given to women, the quota for the women from SC, ST and OBC communities should be worked out separately. They should not be included in the already existing quota for SCs, STs and OBCs communities else it will be unfair to these communities, said the former UP CM.
Mayawati also raised a few demands concerning the women’s reservation bill but said that her party will vote for the bill in the house and help in getting it passed even if the demands are not met by the government, only for the cause of the women who have been kept backward compared to men all these years.
“However, if the bill gets passed without the changes that we are seeking it will only show that the casteist thinking of the BJP, Congress and the company has not changed and these parties want to keep these communities backward.”
She said that she has raised this issue multiple times in the parliament on behalf of her party, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), advocating for 50% reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies and a separate quota for SC, ST, and OBC women.
“If a separate quota is not assured to the SC, ST and OBC women, it will be difficult for them to get a chance on general category seats because casteist parties do not want to see them progress.”
The provision for reservation in government jobs and politics was made in the constitution for the people from these communities by Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar because these people have remained educationally, socially and economically backward given the casteist mindset and they still are backward, she added.
She also demanded transparency in the allocation of seats for women from these communities in the reservation bill and called for a time-bound implementation of the bill.
“Our party welcomes the start of the new parliament. I was fortunate to have had the privilege to be a part of both the houses,” she added.
